TV Break Ups

Ross and Rachel - Friends

You've all seen Friends a million times right? Well the two Rs were the hook and romantic lynch pin of the show. It was an event when they hooked up following all the obstacles in their way. All round nice guy and loser in love Ross hooked up with the popular and drifting Rachel during the second season. They're break up came after Rachel spent too much time talking about her new co-worker and Ross all got jealous and they went on a break and Ross instantly slept with the hot girl from the copy shop. After that he wasn't such a nice guy character but they dragged out the relationship from them having an accidental baby in season 8 until the 10th season finale when they finally resume their relationship in a neat tidy bow.

Buffy and Angel - Buffy the Vampire Slayer

It's that age old story: Girl meets boy, boy turns out to be a vampire, girl and vampire fall in love, girl sleeps with vampire, boy turns evil and tortures your friends, vampire becomes good again, girl sends vampire to hell, vampire returns from hell and then moves to LA. Never was there a story of more woe.

JD and Elliot - Scrubs

This was pretty cool. Every sitcom has a stock set of characters who are going to interact in a particular way. If JD was labelled leading man, then Elliot was clearly marked love interest (and I'm not being sexist, it's sitcom dynamics). For the most part of Scrubs 8 year run - season 9 is a spin-off in my brain - JD and Elliot were apart. The first run of their relationship was dealt with not in a long drawn out way but in a single episode, flashing back and forwards to their first day of loving. Win for storytelling dynamics.

Ted and Victoria - How I Met Your Mother

Ted's had a lot of relationships on How I Met Your Mother. Probably lots of people think Robin is the one that got away but clearly it's Victoria because she's cool, funny and bakes cupcakes. So they were mostly happy and then she went to Germany to some cook school. They tried long distance but ultimately it wasn't to be, basically because Ted wanted to sleep with Robin. Maybe if they'd had free video chat it might have lasted longer.

Sam and Diane - Cheers

You remember Cheers right? Well they all know your name so brush up on your classic TV comedies. Sam was a former baseball player bar owner and Diane was an intellectual snob working as a waitress. She had been a perpetual grad student and took the job at Cheers following a jilting from her professor. They enjoyed flirtation followed by a rocky relationship followed by a break up which resulted in Diane locked up in a mental asylum suffering from severe depression and eventually to a convent. Heartbreak really hurts.

Karl and Susan Kennedy - Neighbours

Perhaps the Kennedy's are one of the great romances of 20th and 21st century fiction. Things seemed to be so solid for the family when they moved to Erinsborough back in 1994. The college sweethearts arrived in Ramsay Street with their three children and all appeared to be well. Then Sarah Beaumont arrived as sexy receptionist and Karl just can't resist her kisses. The couple reconciled but then Susan lost all her memories, forgot her marriage and her children and after 30 years the couple divorced after Karl cheated again with bad girl Izzy Hoyland. Then Susan got married to Alex, adopted his kids, he died. Then Karl had a new baby with Izzy but then they got back together. They're currently split again following emotional cheating with a man who reminded her of her intermittent husband. To be honest I've slightly lost track …..

I'm familiar with all these couples except Buffy and Angel and Karl and Susan.

I think Ross and Rachel was probably one of the definitive experiences of 90s and sitcom television. That being said their relationship was irritating at times. There was too much with the back and forth, fire and desire type deal.

Sam and Diane was a case of opposites who had a hot flame but couldn't sustain a long burning fire.

JD and Elliot have to be my favorite couple you mentioned. They were so sweet together and while they each had their problems they seemed to bring out the best in each other.

Finally, Ted and Victoria were so sickeningly sweet together that I was hoping it didn't work. At least with Robin there was some give and take as well as friction. And when she came back earlier this season, it was all the more confirmation they couldn't work together.

Very cool hub, voted up, interesting and awesome!
